Five Fathom Down
Sound Installation
In this sound installation, coral-reef sounds and a mezzo-soprano voice resonate through the 366-meter-long Kikai Underground Dam Tunnel, around 20 meters below ground.
The song is Full Fathom Five from Shakespeare's play The Tempest. Its imagery of human bones becoming coral and eyes becoming pearls beneath the sea is heard within an island formed from coral reefs.
The voice reaches you transformed by the long tunnel's echoes. Walk or pause and listen closely to the singing, coral-reef sounds, footsteps, and dripping water. The work brings the vast timescales held in the strata into relation with your own body in the present.
