Microatoll Overlooking the Island

Porites coral microatoll on a rocky shore

Drifted Porites Coral

A Porites coral microatoll washed ashore on Kikai Island. Connected to the story of how the island's land took shape, this coral is displayed at a site overlooking its terraces.

A microatoll is a coral colony that grows in shallow water and develops a flat upper surface. Parts exposed above the water at low tide have limited upward growth, while the submerged edges continue to grow outward, creating this shape.

The terraces across Kikai Island also preserve a history of coral reefs that grew in the sea. Reef growth, uplift - the rising of the land - and changes in sea level have together shaped the island's stepped landscape.

Look at the coral before you and the island landscape beyond. By viewing them together, you can sense the connection between life in the sea and the land on which we live.
