100 Views of Coral Day: A Day in Kikaijima Captured by 200 Eyes

Indoor exhibition of photographs taken by islanders

Photo Exhibition

The islanders' photographs are coming home to Kikai Island. 100 Views of Coral Day is a photography exhibition selected as a finalist for the KG+ DISCOVERY Award at KYOTOGRAPHIE / KG+.

On a day in March 2026, islanders, researchers, and visitors each photographed the same day from their own perspectives. Their photographs capture everyday life and landscapes on the island.

A selection of 100 photographs is arranged chronologically in a cylindrical installation. Surrounded by the photographs, visitors can follow a day on the island and rediscover familiar scenes through many different people's eyes.

Yuran Yuran Tree: Banyan of Light

Participatory MR Work (a mixed-reality experience using a VR headset)

The banyan tree Yurayun-hi, around 120 years old, once stood in front of Sango Lodge. Since the days when the site was an elementary school, it had been a symbolic gathering place where children and islanders met in its shade. Even after the tree fell in a typhoon in June 2026, a small offshoot grown from one of its branches continues to live here.

Through a VR headset, you see 100,000 particles of light gather in the landscape before you, taking the shape of the tree as it once stood. From within the wind come the sounds of nature and traces of human presence. This mixed-reality artwork invites you to sense, through light and voices, the memories that linger where the tree once stood.

During the biennale, memories and voices shared by islanders will gradually become part of the artwork. The tree of light will grow day by day with the islanders' memories.

Islanders + SceNE Project (RIHN), Nako Shigesada

SceNE is a research project at the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature.

By bringing together environmental records preserved in coral growth rings and the memories of people who live in local communities, SceNE explores relationships between people and nature. Researchers, artists, and community members work together through science and art to consider the future of their communities.
