When the Island Was Sea

Washi Paper and Video Installation
On Kikai Island, coral reefs once beneath the sea have become land where people now live. This installation explores the connections between sea and land through washi paper and video.
The surface of an approximately 40,000-year-old coral reef on the island's coast is transferred onto washi paper using frottage, a rubbing technique that captures its texture. These impressions are combined with footage of corals living underwater today and images of corals around 100,000 years old remaining at Point 211.
The venue, Onotsu Kamiya Community Center, extends out over the sea. View the work alongside changing tides, natural light, and sea breezes, and sense the layers of time held in the sea and the island.

Artist

I am Yuna Yagi, a visual artist.
I will be taking part in the Coral Islands Science and Art Biennale on Kikai Island.
On Kikai Island, memories of the sea from around 100,000 years ago remain in its corals and geological strata. Places once beneath the sea have become land, and the island continues to rise gradually today.
In this work, I hope to give form to this immense passage of time and the memories of the sea inscribed in the island through photography and light.
I believe that the meeting of science and art may reveal time and landscapes that can only be seen on this island.
I would be delighted if you would join me in reflecting on the vast span of time held by Kikai Island.
